Every summer brings a new group of campers to Camp Erin, a camp that combines fun-filled activities with grief support for children and teens who have lost a loved one. For the last eight years each Oregon camp attendee has been greeted by a cuddly teddy bear on their bunk, wearing an adorable costume that's been knit or crocheted by friends of Knitting Bee. We've donated hundreds and hundreds of outfits over the years, and I always look forward to seeing how the Camp Erin bears bring together all of the generosity and creativity that exists in the Knitting Bee community.
Before the bears head to camp we've always had a team of judges award prizes for the cutest costumes. This year we decided it would be fun to try something different. YOU get to pick the prize winners. Sound good?!
Here's how it's going to work:
Make a bear costume (or two, or three) and turn it into the Bee by Sunday, July 13th. Like always, the majority of the bear's outfit must be hand knit or crocheted by you and include both a sweater and some sort of hat or headband. We have some very basic free patterns available here, but we are going to need some larger sweaters this year for some extra plump bears. Please make sure your costumes are clean and free of pet hair.
Then the voting will begin. Tell your family and friends! Everyone who stops by Knitting Bee between July 15th and 22nd will receive 4 tickets each visit (limit 4 tickets per person, per day) to vote on their favorite bear in each of these categories:
Most Glamorous - think ruffles and frills, evening attire or bling
Most Outdoorsy - rugged and ready for fun in the Pacific Northwest
Most Whimsical - unique and imaginative, makes you smile
Most Accomplished - showcases great knitting technique like cables, lace or colorwork
We'll tally your votes and award $50.00 gift certificates to the makers of the winning bear costumes at our annual summer party on Wednesday evening, July 23rd. Plus we'll draw one random winner from all of the donated outfits. Everyone is invited to join us for a fun night of knitting, stories, and festive food & drink.
So mark your calendars, and get those bear outfits in by Sunday, July 13th!
