We have classes in knitting, crochet and spinning for all levels of experience.

Student Discounts: Students receive a non-transferable 10% storewide discount upon registering for class.
Discount is valid on all purchases through the last day of class; please remind cashier of your class enrollment.
Sorry, no additional discounts on sale items or class fees.

Registration: Class fees must be paid in full at sign-up to reserve your space. You can register at the shop or by
phone at (503)439-3316 with a credit card.

Class Size & Etiquette: Maximum class size is 8 students. Classes with fewer than 3 students may be cancelled
and a refund will be issued. Please purchase class materials prior to the start of class. Cell phone ringers should
be set to silent and any calls should be taken away from the class area.

Cancellations: You may cancel up to one week before your class for a full refund. If you cancel later, we can’t
issue a refund unless we are able to fill your spot from a waiting list.

accommodate new knitters who know how to knit and purl.

Learn to knit or tackle a new technique with your own knitting coach. Meet at the
shop at a time that fits best with your schedule. Great for kids, too! Hourly fee:
$20.00 for one person or $30.00 for two people. Group pricing available. Call the

Learn to Knit Crash Course with Elaine Bueffel
Want to get knitting in a hurry? Our one session knitting crash course is for you!
Using chunky yarn and big needles, we’ll show you how to cast on and knit to
create a fun and fashionable garter stitch scarf. Class fee: $20.00 + materials

Knitting Basics with Elaine Bueffel
In this three session class you’ll learn all the basics: casting on, the knit stitch, the
purl stitch, binding off, yarn and needle selection and more. You’ll make a cute
sampler scarf that uses a variety of stitches including garter, stockinette, ribbing
and seed. We’ll also learn how to diagnose and correct our mistakes. Come get
your knit on! Class fee: $45.00 + materials

Drop Spindle Basics with Anita Osterhaug
Who needs a wheel? With a drop spindle you can spin anywhere, anytime. Anita
will show you how to draft fiber, control twist and spin like a pro using a top
whorl drop spindle. Warning: spindle spinning is addictive! Class fee: $30.00,
includes fiber.

Crochet Basics: Retro-Chic Potholders with Darla J. Fanton
Remember those brightly colored potholders and dishcloths your great aunt used
to make? They’re suddenly hot again, showing up on the pages of Martha Stewart
Living and online design blogs. Learn the basic elements of crochet – the chain,
single crochet, double crochet, changing colors and how to read crochet
instructions – while you work your project of choice. If you decide to make a
dishcloth or coaster you may finish in class. Or start the double-thick potholder
and finish it on your own. If you already know the basics, Darla has developed a
more complicated post stitch design that will help polish your pattern reading
skills. All skill levels welcome! Class fee: $25.00 + materials

Drop-in Knitting Clinic with Nancy Hinsch 
Need help seaming a sweater, navigating a pattern or learning a new technique?
Come in for an informal tutorial session. Fee is $15.00 for 2 hours or $8.00 for 1
hour (2:00-3:00 only, please). Maximum 5 students; please call in advance to
reserve your spot.

Continental Knitting with Tess Mattos 
Learn to knit and purl while carrying the yarn in your left hand. Also known as
“picking,” this method can be more efficient, faster, and easier on your hands and
arms. Also useful for throwers who want to try stranding. Basic knitting skills
required. Class fee: $25.00

Picking up Stitches with Tess Mattos
Did you know that there’s a difference between “picking up” and “picking up and
knitting” stitches? In this tutorial we’ll explore which technique to use when,
where to insert the needle so that holes are minimized, how many stitches to pick
up, stitch ratios, picking up on straight versus curved edges, and more. Please
bring homework. Class fee: $25.00

Finishing Workshop with Nancy Hinsch 
In this comprehensive workshop, blue-ribbon winner Nancy Hinsch will
demonstrate a variety of blocking techniques, show you how to shape and join a
short row shoulder, teach you how to make invisible seams & more. Please bring

Charts: They Are Your Friends (Really!) with Christina Peters 
Learning how to read charted knitting patterns can make you a more intuitive
knitter, yet many find them intimidating at first. Christina will cover how to read
charts for flat knitting versus circular, how to decipher symbols, understand
repeats and blanks. Please feel free to bring any pattern you’d like to chart, or any
charts you find confusing. Class fee: $25.00

Fixing Mistakes with Jami Brynildson 
Calling all new knitters: Learn what to do when good stitches go bad ... don’t
panic! This class will help you recognize mistakes and give you the confidence to
unknit, pick up dropped stitches and rip out with control. Please bring homework

Bella’s Mittens with Stephanie Engle
Learn how to work a cable panel, pickup stitches and increase and decrease using
the magic loop technique while you knit these on-trend chunky mittens inspired
by those worn by Bella in the “Twilight” movies and designed by Marielle
Henault. Perfect for gifting! Previous experience knitting in the round required.

Pocket Hat with Sharon Stewart
This cozy cap features a sweet little pocket on the side. Perfect for gifting, just
tuck a wee treasure or special note into the pocket as a surprise. Learn how to
work an easy mock cable, insert a pocket, make a buttonhole and i-cord button
and optional pom-pom as you knit this very cute winter topper. Previous circular
knitting experience recommended.

Tiny Tea Leaves Cardi with Tanya Patterson
Learn all the basics of topdown sweater knitting while you make this absolutely
adorable cardi for baby (or if you’re really ambitious and have lots of knitting
time, make the grown up version). The sweater is knit all in one piece with no
seaming, and you’ll get lots of practice reading a pattern, increasing to create a
“ruched” detail, picking up stitches for button bands, and more. Ability to
confidently knit and purl required. Class fee: $50.00 + materials

Lots of Slippers with Trish Mitberg 
Knit a cute pair of slippers in just a couple of hours ... chunky yarn is the secret!
You’ll learn how to turn a heel in a new, easy and interesting way and we’ll also
cover picking up stitches, knitting in the round and decreasing. Once you get the
hang of it, you’ll be able to make a pair for everyone in the family.

Checkerboard Hat: Intro to Color Stranding with Stephanie Engle
Stranding is a technique for creating a knitted fabric with two or more colors of
yarn at the same time by carrying the unused color across the back of the work. It’
s the basis of Fair Isle knitting, and super fun to learn–especially when you’re
using worsted weight yarn! In this one session class Stephanie will show you how
to hold the yarn and how to control your tension while you create a simple
checkerboard pattern in a beanie-style cap. Suitable for new knitters who can
confidently knit and purl. Please bring homework.

Ruffled Brioche Scarf with Tanya Patterson
This gorgeous scarf combines two of fall’s hottest fashion trends: chunky knits
and ruffles. First you’ll learn how to use Trendsetter Cha Cha to make flirty
ruffled edges, then we’ll transition to super bulky Malabrigo Rasta and learn how
to work brioche stitch using the knit one below technique. Choose full length or
a shorter scarf with a big button.

Copper River Fair Isle Hat with Stephanie Engle
In this more intensive introduction to stranding and Fair Isle knitting techniques
you’ll learn how to knit holding a different color of yarn in each hand while
maintaining proper tension. The Copper River Hat features a classic two-color

Flower Fixation Baby Hat with Nancy Hinsch 
This absolutely adorable baby hat will teach you a whole bunch of skills! In the
first class we’ll cast-on, work the ribbing and learn a very simple lace pattern on
circular needles. In the second, we’ll learn how to shape the top of the hat and
how to make some sweet little flowers for adornment. Suitable for beginners who
can confidently knit and purl.

Basic Head Hugger Hat with Tanya Patterson 
Have you made your first hat yet? Tanya will show you the basics of knitting in

Crochet Hanger Cozies with Darla J. Fanton
Dress up your closet and increase your crochet skills at the same time! If you
dislike working a long foundation chain, you’ll love this clever technique for
working the foundation chain and the first row at the same time. These pretty
hanger covers are quick and fun to make, plus they’re gentle on your clothes.

Knitting Two Socks: One Inside the Other with Christina Peters
Calling all adventurous sock knitters, have we got the class for you! Using double
knitting techniques you’ll learn to knit two socks simultaneously, one inside the
other. Amaze your friends and family ... heck, amaze yourself.  For class purposes
we’ll work a pair of child-sized socks in worsted weight yarn on double pointed
needles (or on magic loop if that’s your preferred technique). This is a fast paced
class for those who’ve knit socks before. Please complete homework prior to
class. Class fee: $35.00 + materials

Slip-stitch Double Knit Scarf with Trish Mitberg
Create a beautiful double-sided striped scarf using slipped stitches. This
technique is easier to work than other double knitting methods, plus it’s a lot of
fun! Trish makes it even more interesting by using two contrasting colors of Noro
Kureyon. Super addictive!

Lacy Sampler Scarf with Christina Peters
If you’ve tried lace before but lack confidence, this is the class for you! This
sampler scarf features several lively lace patterns, including classic horseshoe,
flame chevron, diamond mesh, twin leaf, and the cloisters. You’ll get plenty of
practice working both longer and shorter pattern repeats. We’ll also learn how to
graft two directional pieces and discuss the use of life lines and blocking
techniques. For intermediate knitters who are comfortable working with
laceweight yarn. Class fee: $35.00 + materials

We’ve been informally meeting on Sunday afternoons and have worked our way
through the Geodesic Cardigan and Buttercup. What will we make next? Check

Once a month we put our needles and hooks together for local charities. This fall
we’re working on machine washable hat-scarf-mitten sets for Washington County
Foster Closet, more kids hats for Community Action Head Start, and funky hats,
scarves or mitts for homeless youth at p:ear. More details on our website.

Special Fall Workshops

Waves in the Square Lace Workshop with Sivia Harding
We’re excited to have designer Sivia Harding back at the Bee for another of her
fabulous lace workshops. With Sivia’s guidance you’ll become a more intuitive lace
knitter while working this lovely shawl or smaller shawlette that features the
graceful “Print o’ the Wave” lace pattern and a picot bind off that can be beaded or
not, your choice. The unique raglan shaping ensures a comfortable fit that will stay
put on your shoulders. You’ll learn tips and tricks for reading charts, blocking your
finished lace, selecting beads and adding beads as you go with the crochet hook
method. Sivia teaches in workshops across the US and Canada and her designs are
featured in her own pattern line as well as numerous online sites, books and
magazines.

Toe-up! Sock Knitting Workshop with Chrissy Gardiner
Learn the advantages of knitting socks starting at the toe in this
6-hour workshop with knitwear designer and author Chrissy Gardiner. You’ll make a
small sample sock, allowing you to learn and practice casting on for the toe, turning
the heel, and perfecting a stretchy bind-off for the cuff. Students should be
comfortable knitting in the round, increasing and decreasing. Chrissy is the author
of
Toe-up! Patterns & Worksheets to Whip Your Sock Knitting Into Shape and
the forthcoming

Birch Entrelac & Lace Workshop
with Chrissy Gardiner
Learn how to work entrelac from a pro! And to keep things really interesting,
Chrissy’s gorgeous design features an elegant strip of lace in the center of each
entrelac rectangle. You can choose to knit Birch as a shawl or scarf, you’re
guaranteed to learn lots of tips and tricks along the way. Chrissy teaches across the
US and recently returned from teaching at London’s Knit Nation. Her designs have
appeared in many magazines including
